Having started using the internet from a young age, it has become a large part of my life. Being born as an Asian guy in the West, you are exposed to layers of bullshit and negative stereotyping which you must wade through. It makes understanding yourself and having a sense of identity a lot harder. You are torn between conforming to social values of the West while at the same time exploring traditional values and a compromise must be made between the two.
Asians, particularly Asian males, have been negatively stereotyped since the beginning of time. Why? I suppose the simplest answer would be to make those who negatively stereotype feel better about themselves. There are of course, people who aren’t racist, but many people still hold archaic views of Asians and the Chinese. You’ve heard these before. “Chink.” “Small Asian penis.” “Dog eater.” And that’s only touching the tip of the iceberg. I could list many more stereotypes but the list would go on forever.
Firstly, let me talk about racism. We humans belong under a single species, but people are judged so much based on their race. They don’t know you, they have never seen you or spoken to you, but they already judge you based on your race. This is not fair. Some people say, just take a joke, or get over your insecurities, and take those racial slurs like a man. No, being called a chink or being referred to as chong is not funny. It is not a joke. It is racism. Many insecurities wouldn’t exist in the first place without stereotyping. We get over them over time, but that doesn’t make racial slurs any more acceptable.
ASIAN MALE NEGATIVE STEREOTYPING
For Asian males, stereotypes are designed to lower our confidence. We are emasculated, and this in turn gives rise to stereotypes like Asians have low confidence. We have to work twice as hard to break these, and be on the same social standing as other males in certain countries, because people are brainwashed by the media to have these incorrect perceptions of us. In fact, it is so bad that even Asian females, especially those in America, go in a downward spiral of self hate and don’t think Asian men are attractive or refuse to date Asian men altogether. It is uncommon to see such a divide between members of the same race due to racism. You might say it is just racial preference. Maybe they do have a preference, but something is clearly wrong when an Asian women says to an Asian guy: “You are attractive for an Asian.” This is a racially charged statement and shows self hate and racism towards her own culture. Also bear in mind, “It’s just a preference” is the same statement people use to justify ‘yellow fever’.
If you ever read news and browse the comment sections of articles or posts, you will come to realise people have a deluded view of China. People seem to think all the people there are bad, the country is bad. They think that everyone there enjoys torturing animals. Some people even think that everything is wrong with China and China does everything wrong. It really makes you wonder how these people came to harbour such thoughts and how people can be so closed minded. Some people even choose to live there, while hating it and posting hate online. It absolutely boggles my mind how much of the West has a completely warped view of China and Chinese people. You wouldn’t think people would generalise to such an extent but clearly they do.
You would think from reading comments online that people base their opinions only and only from bad news and negative aspects of China. These people have never been to China, yet any comment bashing China will get upvoted and liked. The extent of this makes me sad. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying China is perfect. It does more than a few things wrong, but what about those things it gets right? You probably saw it coming, people quickly downplay any achievements or efforts of China. Anything having to do with animals will probably be spammed with animal cruelty comments. Anything to do with products will probably be spammed with something about cheap Chinese quality. You can imagine how hard it is to identify with being Chinese when I see every so much hate.
I hope people do not keep such a close minded way of thinking. If you have any thoughts or opinions about this post please let me know in the comments! I would very much like to know how things came to be this way, and would like to put an end to these false perceptions.
